  • SIRS Knowledge Source: SIRS Knowledge Source (SKS) is a comprehensive database portal which is comprised of several distinct reference databases including SIRS Researcher®, SIRS Government Reporter®, SIRS Renaissance®, SKS WebSelect™, SIRS Discoverer®, and Discoverer WebFind™. Updated daily, SKS provides relevant, credible information on social issues, science, history, government, the arts and humanities. Full-text articles and Internet resources are carefully selected from thousands of domestic and international publications and respected organizations. Begin your research by performing a subject heading search. That will bring up a list of LC Subject Headings related to your search terms. If you are not returning many results through subject heading searches, try a keyword search. SIRS is not as intuitive as some of the other databases, so you need to be more flexible in your search terms and strategies. SIRS has an online Quick Start Guide with more detailed search strategies. *Offers a Pro/Con perspective.

  • CQ -- Congressional Quarterly : CQ Researcher is often the first source that librarians recommend when researchers are seeking original, comprehensive reporting and analysis on issues in the news. Founded in 1923 as Editorial Research Reports, CQ Researcher is noted for its in-depth, unbiased coverage of health, social trends, criminal justice, international affairs, education, the environment, technology, and the economy. *Offers a Pro/Con perspective.

  • Science on Line: One of the Facts On File databases that provide comprehensive reference coverage in its subject areas with titles that are thoroughly researched, comprehensive in nature, and authoritative. Authors and editors are held to the highest standards of publishing when it comes to presenting balanced, complete and forthright information resources.

The following databases are published by Gale and have similar interfaces and use similar search strategies. Click Subject Guide to begin your research. Use your topic as search terms/keywords. Tabs across the search results indicate the type of resource. Use tabs to find Viewpoints, Reference, Magazines, Academic Journals, News, Primary Sources, Statistics, Multimedia and "Authoritative Websites".

  • Gale PowerSearch: Allows you to search all or selected Gale databases simultaneously.

  • Gale Virtual Reference Library: Gale Virtual Reference Library is a database of encyclopedias and specialized reference sources for multidisciplinary research. These reference materials once were accessible only in the library, but now you can access them online from the library or remotely 24/7. This collection includes reference materials funding by the NYSL and those purchased by PHS.

  • Opposing Viewpoints: Information on today's hottest social issues. Features include viewpoint articles, full-text magazine and newspaper articles, primary source documents, statistics, images and podcasts, and links to Websites. *Offers a Pro/Con perspective.

  • Student Resource Center: Broad database offering resources in literature, cultures, science, history, and geography. Full-text articles from reference works, primary sources, and periodicals.

Free Websites: Before using free websites, review the Website Evaluation PowerPoint to help you judge their reliability. Especially note that many of these sites (and sites you may find doing your own searching) are advocacy organizations, meaning they have a particular position on an issue and use their website to further the objectives of their group.

  • Center for Immigration Studies: The Center for Immigration Studies is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit research organization founded in 1985. It is the nation's only think tank devoted exclusively to research and policy analysis of the economic, social, demographic, fiscal, and other impacts of immigration on the United States.

  • Negative Population Growth: (NPG) is a national membership organization founded in 1972 to educate the American public and political leaders about the detrimental effects of overpopulation on our environment, resources and quality of life. NPG advocates a smaller and truly sustainable United States population accomplished through smaller families and lower, more traditional immigration levels.

  • Treehugger: TreeHugger is the leading media outlet dedicated to driving sustainability mainstream. Partial to a modern aesthetic, we strive to be a one-stop shop for green news, solutions, and product information.

  • *Controlled vocabularies are used in subject indexing schemes, subject headings, thesauri and taxonomies. Controlled vocabulary schemes mandate the uses of predefined, authorised terms that have been preselected by the designer of the controlled vocabulary as opposed to natural language vocabularies where there is no restriction on the vocabulary that can be used.
